Abstract |
Classified land depicting the suitability for growing various agricultural enterprises including Barley, Blueberries, Carrot seed, Carrots, Cherries, Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus nitens, Hazelnuts, Industrial Hemp, Linseed, Olives, Onions, Pinus radiata, Poppies, Potatoes, Pyrethrum, Raspberries, Sparkling wine grapes, Strawberries, Table wine grapes and Wheat. This complements a range of additional pasture crop species including Lucerne, Rye Grass, Cocksfoot Continental, Cocksfoot Mediterranean, Tall Fescue Continental, Tall Fescue Mediterranean, Red Clover, Strawberry Clover, White Clover and Phalaris. All map outputs assume water availability is not a constraint. Suitability is determined from mapped soil and climate parameters guided by established crop rules that allocate the land as either Well suited, Suitable, Moderately suitable or Unsuitable with subclasses incorporated to identify situations where management of limitations can improve crop suitability. The outputs are an extension of the original 'Wealth from Water' datasets that originally covered the extents of the Meander irrigation scheme area of 45,000 ha, Flinders Island area of 10,000 ha and 27,000 ha in the Midlands. The new outputs now delineate all land areas of Tasmania at a spatial resolution of 30m with recent efforts of soil sampling and climate monitoring focussed towards the midland region of Tasmania (as part of the Water for Profit program). |

Lineage Statement |
Digital Soil Assessment is being used to model land suitability in recently commissioned irrigation schemes in the State of Tasmania, Australia, in support of Government agricultural expansion policy. The model requires comprehensive soil, climate and terrain parameters to rate the suitability of land for each chosen enterprise. The Wealth from Water pilot program commenced in a 20,000 ha irrigation district in the Meander Valley Region. This was later extended to cover a further 25,000 ha in the Meander area, 27,000 ha through the Midlands around Tunbridge, Woodbury, York Plains, Nala and Andover and an additional 10,000ha on Flinders Island. The project has now evolved to the state wide extent as part of the Water for Profit program, an element of the Tasmanian government AgriVision 2050 plan for agriculture with an additional concentration of soil and climate sampling occurring for the Midlands area of Tasmania (approximately 400,000 ha of additional detailed analysis). Digital soil mapping techniques were used to produce soil information at 80m resolution for areas outside of the original pilot areas, whereas 30m resolution mapping were conducted for areas inside the pilot areas. Recently, mapping for areas outside of the original pilot areas have improved to a resolution of 30m using newly derived soil core and legacy sampling data from the midlands and other locations across the state. Soil attribute spatial layers were produced from interpolation of the soil core data using the regression trees data mining algorithm in concert with predictive covariate data such as the SRTM DEM and derivatives, Gamma Radiometrics, legacy soil map, surface geology, and Satellite imagery. Layers produced included soil depth, pH, electrical conductivity, clay and stone content, drainage, and depth to sodic and/or impeding layer. Uncertainty assessment of the surfaces involved running a K-fold cross validation procedure, the result of which can be requested from the custodian. In general, however, the assessment resulted in acceptable prediction accuracies for each surface with the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), R2 and concordance coefficient within acceptable ranges. Note that additional information concerning the Digital Soil Mapping layers can be referred here: https://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/app/content/data/geo-meta-data-record?detailRecordUID=98f416e6-f381-48e2-8b16-5c31a8e45ba5&draftCreateEdit=true
Temporal climatic grid inputs of Frost Risk, Growing Season, Chill Hours, and Rainfall Intensity were generated using available long-term weather stations (for years 1998-2017), short-term temperature sensor data (for years 2011-2017) in concert with explanatory terrain data. Calibration of the short-term temperature sensor data (over 600 in total) to the long-term Bureau of Meteorology temperature stations (73 in total) averaged an R2 of 0.9 in addition to mean absolute error below 1.5C indicating good accuracy of the calibration procedure. The spatial modelling prediction accuracy were also satisfactory with validation statistics within acceptable ranges (after K-fold cross validation of the regression tree models used to produce each climate surface). The diagnostics information for each surface can be made available upon request. Note that additional information concerning the Digital Climate Mapping layers can be referred here:

Lineage Description |
Position Accuracy: 30m resolution. Attribute Accuracy: Each Raster cell is attributed by multiple soil and climate models to arrive at a suitability rating. The accuracy is therefore limited by the precision of the input models (refer here for information regarding the input soil maps: https://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/app/content/data/geo-meta-data-record?detailRecordUID=98f416e6-f381-48e2-8b16-5c31a8e45ba5&draftCreateEdit=true and here regarding the input climate maps: https://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/app/content/data/geo-meta-data-record?detailRecordUID=ba62f124-5906-4471-a01c-9b57b6142055&draftCreateEdit=true). The result of the validation diagnostics can be made available for each surface on request. The input soil models validated to at least a reasonable level with the standard error within acceptable ranges. Preliminary field validation was carried out to ensure integrity had been maintained and from this, attribute accuracy of the suitability categories was estimated to be no worse than 70%. Attribute accuracy is expected to be optimal in the Meander irrigation scheme area of 45,000 ha, Flinders Island area of 10,000 ha and 27,000 ha in the Midlands where a greater soil and temperature logger reconnaissance effort was conducted during the pilot phase of the Wealth from Water project in 2011-2012 and in the extension phase in 2012-2014. (refer to: http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/agriculture/investing-in-irrigation/enterprise-suitability-toolkit). During the Water for Profit project in 2015-2017 an additional 400 soil sites were sampled and a further 100 temperature logger sites deployed to the Midlands area representing over 400,000 ha of improved mapping detail for the area. Logical Consistency: All raster cell data are labelled via accompanying look up tables. There are no duplicates. Completeness: The spatial layers cover the entire state of Tasmania, excluding Macquarie Island. Additional: Component layers of Digital Soil Mapping components, modelled climate layers and crop rules are available upon request. |
