Lineage Description |
The CFEV Waterbodies spatial data layer was derived from the LIST 1:25,000 Hydrographic Area data layer. The CFEV waterbodies data layer primarily includes lacustrine ecosystems which are still, open water systems such as lakes.
Waterbodies <1 ha in size were removed from the LIST data set for fear that the CFEV assessment for waterbodies would be swamped by a very large number of very small waterbodies on the Central Plateau. Mapping rules were applied to the remaining polygons (see the CFEV Technical Report (http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/water/water-monitoring-and-assessment/cfev-program/cfev-resources#TheCFEVTechnicalReport) for specific rules) to separate out the natural or â¿¿validâ¿¿ waterbodies.
Waterbodies were categorised into two classes:
- â¿¿validâ¿¿ (all natural lakes and large Hydro storages plus some large non-Hydro storages (e.g. Lake Leake and Tooms Lake)
- â¿¿invalidâ¿¿ (includes large farm dams, settling ponds and drinking water reservoirs).
After applying the â¿¿invalidâ¿¿ waterbodies rules, a few waterbodies had to be manually re-assigned to the â¿¿validâ¿¿ waterbodies data layer. These included Lake Chisholm, coastal lagoons and the meromictic lakes. Four Springs Lake was also added.
The â¿¿validâ¿¿ waterbodies were assessed as part of the CFEV assessment, while the waterbodies that were excluded using the above rules (the â¿¿invalidâ¿¿ waterbodies) were retained in a separate â¿¿invalidâ¿¿ waterbodies data set.
Individual features (lakes and waterbodies) within the CFEV Waterbodies data layer have been assessed using the CFEV assessment framework. This included a classification, condition assessment and rankings of conservation value and conservation management priority. Details of the framework can be found on the CFEV Program website (http://dpipwe.tas.gov.au/water/water-monitoring-and-assessment/cfev-program/about-the-cfev-project) and in the CFEV Project Technical Report.
